How we support Nigerian Overseas Prisoners
How We Support Nigerian Overseas Prisoners
Our work centres on five key areas of support:
1. Visits
We believe in the power of personal connection. Our representatives visit prisons overseas to meet with Nigerian prisoners, offering emotional and moral support. These visits help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide an opportunity to assess individual needs, ensuring that each person knows they are valued and supported.
2. Supply of Reading Materials
Education and personal growth are at the heart of our efforts. We provide books, religious texts, and vocational training materials to promote intellectual and spiritual development. These resources not only help prisoners stay connected to their culture but also empower them to prepare for life beyond incarceration.
3. Family Interface
Maintaining family connections is essential for emotional wellbeing. At NOPSI, we act as a bridge between prisoners and their families in Nigeria. We facilitate communication, share updates, and guide families on how best to support their loved ones during this challenging time.
4. International Free Post
Communication is a lifeline. We ensure prisoners can stay in touch with their families and friends by providing free or subsidised postal services. For those facing literacy challenges, we assist with letter writing, ensuring no one is left without a voice.
5. Consular Information
Understanding one’s rights and legal options is vital. NOPSI provides up-to-date information on consular services available through Nigerian embassies and high commissions. We also liaise with consular officials to advocate for prisoners’ rights and wellbeing, helping them navigate complex legal systems abroad.
Why Our Work Matters
Incarceration overseas is a deeply isolating experience. At NOPSI, we are committed to restoring dignity, hope, and connection for Nigerian prisoners. By addressing their practical, emotional, and legal needs, we ensure they are not alone in this journey.
